Dental Implants.
"A replacement tooth, anchored in the bone, used like any other."
A missing tooth rarely hurts, which is why patients often leave the gap for years. What does change, slowly, is the position of the surrounding teeth and the bone underneath.
"What you see, what you chew with, and what's underneath. A missing tooth changes all three."
A gap at the front makes you self-conscious. A gap at the back makes life harder.
A tooth might have been missing for years, only recently, or might still be in your mouth with extraction scheduled. Whatever the cause and whatever the timing, what changes after the tooth comes out is the same. There's the look of the gap, especially at the front. There's how you chew, especially at the back, and how your bite settles around the absence. And there's the bone underneath, where the tooth's root used to sit.
All three changes are gradual. The look of a gap can be hidden for a while with a careful smile, but eventually the surrounding teeth start to drift inwards and the gap widens. Chewing on the other side becomes a habit, then becomes the way your jaw works, and other teeth take a load they weren't built for. And underneath, without a tooth root to stimulate it, the jawbone slowly recedes. None of this is dramatic in the short term. Over years it accumulates, and the longer a gap stays, the more involved the eventual replacement becomes.

What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is a small titanium post that we place into your jawbone to replace one or more missing teeth. We then fit a replacement, artificial tooth on top of the implant.
The result is a fixed tooth that looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth. Most patients tell us they stop noticing it's there within weeks of the crown going on.
Dental implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. For single teeth, a single implant is used. For multiple teeth, single implants may be used per tooth or implants may be used to support a bridge. In all cases, you enjoy stable, fixed replacement teeth that look and feel natural.
To replace all of the teeth in a single jaw, see SureFix, our same-day fixed teeth solution for patients who are missing multiple teeth or wearing dentures.
- A titanium post placed in the bone, with a custom crown on top
- Doesn't damage the healthy teeth either side, unlike a bridge
- Stops the jawbone shrinking in the gap

What's involved, step by step.
The implant itself is placed under local anaesthetic. Then the implant is allowed to heal, usually over three months or so, whilst it fuses with your jaw bone. During this time you are given either temporary teeth or the gap is left, depending on where it is and what suits you. Then, once the implant is healed your final replacement teeth are fitted.

Most patients can benefit from dental implant treatment.
If you've lost one or more teeth, a dental implant is usually an option and is often the best choice. However, there are situations where alternative options such as a bridge or denture are required, or where your circumstances may make implant treatment more complex. We will be clear with you on the options available to you, and the benefits and risks involved with each one.
- A single missing tooth, or several missing teeth.
- A failing tooth scheduled for extraction.
- A bridge or denture you no longer trust.
- Healthy gums and adequate jawbone, or willing to consider grafting.
- Non-smokers, or patients willing to stop.
- Active gum disease. We treat the cause first.
- Heavy smokers. Smoking substantially decreases success rates.
- Significant bone loss without the option to graft.
- Children and teenagers. Dental implants are normally reserved for adults.
