Dr Richard Bates

Richard is an experienced implant and dental surgeon. He qualified from the University of Manchester in 2008 and has nearly 20 years' experience across hospital and general dental practice. He comes from a strong dental background: his father and sister are both dental surgeons, and his mother is a dental hygienist.

After his Vocational Training, Richard spent several years in hospital posts in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. There he treated medically compromised patients and worked within surgical teams carrying out major head, neck, facial and jaw procedures. During this time he gained his Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Returning to general practice, Richard worked as a Dentist with a Special Interest in Oral Surgery. He spent many years at an implant referral centre in the West Midlands and completed formal implant training with Straumann at the ITI. He placed his first implants in 2009, and implant dentistry is now the main focus of his work. He treats referred cases ranging from single implants to full-arch treatments. He also accepts referrals for endodontics (root canal treatment), and provides orthodontics using clear aligners and fixed braces.

Outside dentistry, Richard breeds pedigree cats and is a keen botanist with a particular interest in European orchids. He leads botanical wildlife tours and attracted national media attention for rediscovering the Ghost Orchid in the UK, only the second sighting since 1987. He is also a keen photographer and a lover of classic performance cars.
